Mexico's Pet Import Requirements
SENASICA (Mexico's agricultural and food safety authority) governs pet imports. Requirements are the same regardless of which Mexican airport you arrive at:
Dogs
- Rabies vaccination (valid, not expired — minimum 30 days before travel, maximum 1 year)
- Distemper, parvovirus, and infectious hepatitis vaccines
- Internal and external parasite treatment within 6 months
- Veterinary health certificate (issued within 10 days of travel)
- Microchip (ISO 11784/11785 standard — strongly recommended, required in EU)
Cats
- Rabies vaccination (same rules as dogs)
- Panleukopenia (feline distemper) vaccine
- Veterinary health certificate (issued within 10 days)
- Microchip (recommended)
Important: The health certificate must be signed by a licensed (accredited) veterinarian. In the US, USDA endorsement is required for the certificate to be accepted at Mexican customs.
The Health Certificate
This is the most important document. Get it from your vet within 10 calendar days of your departure date. It must include:
- Pet's name, species, breed, age, sex, color
- Microchip number
- Vaccination history with dates
- Statement that the animal is healthy and free of visible signs of disease
- Veterinarian's signature, license number, and date
At Mexican Customs (Cancún / Mexico City Airport)
Declare your pet at the red channel. A SENASICA inspector will review your documents. The process typically takes 15–30 minutes. There is no fee for bringing pets from most countries.
If documents are incomplete, the pet may be held for inspection or required to receive certain treatments at your expense before release.
Finding a Vet in Riviera Maya
Veterinary care is excellent and affordable in the Riviera Maya:
- Playa del Carmen: Several vet clinics on Constituyentes Ave and 30th Ave. Consultation: ~$20–$40 USD.
- Cancún: Larger animal hospitals with 24-hour emergency services.
- Tulum: A few clinics in Tulum Pueblo; serious cases should go to Playa or Cancún.
Pet-Friendly Housing Tips
- Many Mexican landlords restrict pets — always ask before signing a lease
- Say "¿Se aceptan mascotas?" (Are pets accepted?)
- Expect a higher security deposit if pets are allowed ($100–$300 USD extra)
- Facebook groups like "Pet-Friendly Rentals Playa del Carmen" are useful resources
